Not Dead YetThe title of a recent EE TImes article caught my eye: "IP business model to continue to exist, says analyst." We were glad to hear this conclusion from respected analyst Jim Tully, since we certainly plan to continue doingwell providing IP for many more years! The article describes Jim's presentation at the IP 07 conference, organized for an impressive tenth year by Design and Reuse in Grenoble, France. We were there, too, presenting a paper sharing some of the "secrets" behind our so-far fourteen years of success in the IP business. The paper is titled "A Different Path to IP Success: A Decade-Plus Delivering Cores the CAST Way." It describes the To us these things have just been common sense, and reflect the way we would like to be treated by other companies we do business with. At the conference, however, a lot of people came up to me with enthusiastic feedback because our straightforward, totally customer-oriented approach to IP really resonates with lots of designers out there. Some see this as the classic "Little Guys versus Big Company" story, but it's actually not that at all. It's really a matter of "getting IP" or not: we understand your IP needs and have built a business around that, which is very different than building a business that merely capitalizes on IP. Take a look at the paper and let me know what you think; it would be great to hear your own experiences with IP and various providers the past ten years. Happy Holidays! New SubSystem IP CoresOne of Jim Tully's observations from his Grenoble presentation is that the importance and value of bigger chunks of IP is growing fast. Whether you call it a "platform" or an "integrated solution" or an "SoC kernel" as we do, this IP is simply a combination of multiple cores — usually with some essential software — that gives you an even bigger head start on your system than buying individual functions and integrating them yourself.
