NewsCAST and Hantro Announce the Soft Decision Viterbi Synthesizable VHDL Core
This core no longer available
Design Automation Conference, San Francisco -- June 15, 1998 -- Intellectual property (IP) provider CAST, Inc. and development partner Hantro Products Oy today announce a new synthesizable CAST core: the Soft Decision Viterbi VHDL Core.
The Soft Viterbi core is targeted to the error correction and repair needs of wireless communications and consumer electronics applications. It uses a forward error-correction technique that employs convolutional encoding to improve the error rate performance.
The Soft Decision Viterbi Core includes complete block level documentation with full test benches, synthesizable source code, and scripts for synthesis and simulation. It is available immediately. Datasheets are available at the CAST (www.cast-inc.com) and Hantro (www.hantro.com) Web sites. Customers may also locate their local CAST destirbutor at the companys Web site.
More About the Soft Viterbi
The difference between the Soft Decision Viterbi and the Hard Decision Viterbi is that the Soft uses an Euclidean metric to calculate distances, while the Hard uses Hamming distances. This means that in the Soft Decision Viterbi every channel bit is expressed by several levels and the distance of the sample from the right level is the branch metric.
